Summer Maprun 4 Berry Hill |
GL16 7QW |
The fourth event in our summer Maprun series will be held in Berry Hill, in the Forest of Dean.
These events use the Maprun smartphone app to record visits to controls: you can find details of how to get set up with Maprun here.
Parking
Meet by the running track at Five Acres school, GL16 7QW. Due to the ongoing saga with Homes England parking is restricted – please park tightly and follow any marshal’s instructions. Please note the school grounds should be considered strictly off limits for the general public before 5.30 p.m. for child safeguarding reasons.
Registration
Will either be from the back of a car or in the Forest of Dean AC club hut – dependant on weather and if it is open. The club hut is adjacent to the running track. Many thanks to Forest of Dean AC for their support. Registration will not be open before 6:15 p.m. Aim to arrive by 6:40 p.m., in time for the mass start at 7:00 p.m.
Terrain
The course will cover Berry Hill and Broadwell down into Coleford, and the parts of the forest to the east. Most of the terrain will encourage use of hard standing paths and roads but some route choices may involve cutting through terrain for the brave. Some areas of the map are overprinted as out of bounds – please respect these: we do not have permission to cross these areas.
Suitable for wearing shorts. If the weather is predominantly dry leading up to the race then recommended footwear is trainers/road shoes. Some of the trails may get muddy and slippery if it has been very wet, and you may wish to consider trail shoes in these conditions. Full-fell shoes (such as mudclaws/x-talons) or metal dobs are not appropriate.
Cost
£5 seniors, £2 juniors (note: juniors must be accompanied)
The Map
A simplified 1:10,000 map from OpenOrienteeringMap. This shows:
- paths and roads (black)
- open spaces (orange)
- woods and forest (green)
Format
The race takes the form of a 60 minute score course, in which you collect as many points as you can. There are 30 checkpoints:
- checkpoints 1-10, worth 10 points
- checkpoints 11-20, worth 20 points
- checkpoints 21-30, worth 30 points
You lose 10 points for every minute or part minute you are late back, after the permitted 60. The map on your phone will be PIN protected, and you will be given the PIN, together with a paper map, a minute or two before the start.
