We have now published the map and maprun course for Friday’s run on Rodborough Common. The beneficiary of all your efforts will be The Woodland Trust, a charity very close to the hearts of many orienteers.
You can download the map for printing from here.
Remember to check the here on Thursday evening for any late weather updates. We will post a Go/No-Go decision here no later than 20:00 tomorrow.
Click here for full details of the event. Read on for some hints and tips on using MaprunF and Start Anywhere courses.
Course Summary
It is a 60 minute score event, each control being worth 20 points, with a penalty of 10 points per minute or part minute over 60.
You can start at any control, but that must also be your finish control. The designated Start/Finish control simply becomes another control, which you can visit if you wish, but you don’t have to. It is also worth 20 points.
The map shows possible parking places, all marked with a red rectangle. There are other places to park, and there is quite a lot of parking just off the Southern edge of the printed map. This is shown on the phone map. It does involve a 2-300m walk to a start/finish control however.
Using MaprunF
There should be a good phone signal on the Common, but if you are using MaprunG it’s advisable to download the course to your watch before setting out, or where you have a good wifi signal.
Here are a few tips for using maprunF…
- The course is located in the UK/Gloucestershire/Current Series folder on the Maprun server. It’s best to download it before you come to the event
- When you are ready to start, tap Go to Start before approaching your planned Start control. It’s important to check that the app has connected to the phone’s GPS service before setting off. You can do this by checking the GPS status bar at the bottom of the screen. If it is Green, you are good to go. If Red or Amber, the app and GPS are not communicating, and you need to wait until have green status. Sometimes the app wont play, and the line stays obstinately Red. Try switching your phone off completely, and trying again. That normally fixes the problem. You can also tell all is well when the GPS is up and running as you will see a red dot on the screen indicating you current location(according to the phone’s GPS). This will disappear once you pass through the Start.
- If, when you get to where you believe there is a control, you can’t get a beep, don’t hang around too long waiting for one. If you’re sure you are in the right place, press on to the next control. When you have finished your run, tap Show Results on the phone, select the NYD run, and in the top right corner of the screen tap the menu bars. Then select Review Results(HITMO). This will show you where the phone thinks you were at or near a control, but which didn’t register. Just tick the boxes next to these controls, and submit an updated result.
- If you have real problems with your phone, or the event details etc, come down to the map issue point – marked on the map – where there will be someone who may be able to help sort out any problems you have with either. We also have two loan phones which will be fully charged and have the course loaded. These are SIM-less phones, but work fine for maprun….we just have to get back to a wifi signal to upload your result for you. They are available on a first come basis for anyone who forgets their phone, or forgets to charge it up….
Above all, have fun.
