We wrapped up the 2023 MapRun league with a great run amidst the Christmas traffic and revellers in central Cheltenham last night. It was good to see some visitors from as far away as SAX in the South East, plus some familiar faces who haven’t been around for a while, due to injury or other responsibilities.
The results are available on the Results page. Richard Cronin was runaway winner in the overall points competition, with 5 out of 7 scores the perfect 600. Richard also won the Efficiency handicap, for the best points score per km run during the year, but Ian Phillips in second place takes the prize on the one prize per person rule. And Andy Creber won the age handicap prize.
We had a total of 342 runs by 132 different runners during the year, so an average of around 24 runners per race, but with a very long tail of occasional runners doing 1 or 2 races. Only a handful of people did enough races (7) to score their maximum possible best results, which is a little disappointing, but perhaps reflects the wide distribution of our MapRun population. There is quite a lot of work involved in maintaining the league leader board and standings, so we may rethink the league, but we will definitely keep going with our regular programme of MapRuns, night urban races in the winter months, and more rural ones in the lighter evenings.
Many thanks to everyone who organised an event this year; we are still looking for 2024 organisers, so if you fancy a go, do let us know. It’s very easy, and a great way to get to know your locality better.
