02/03/2024 - WNL 2023-24 Final - Cleeve hill
The Western Night League is a series of 60-minute score events, taking place after dark in the winter - headtorches required! Each control in the forest is worth a given number of points: score as many points as you can by visiting controls, and get back within the time limit to avoid late penalties.
NGOC are pleased to invite you to the final event of the 2023/24 League. Located on Cleeve Hill, the area is open heath land, some steep slopes and numerous gorse thickets on the top, Quarries to the western flank. As this is the last event of the season it is (Near) mass start. Prizes, including the much coveted WNL mugs, will be awarded in the Golf Club afterwards.
We are grateful to the Cleeve Common Trust for permission to run on the Common, and to the Golf Club for hosting us.
Car Parking and pub of the night will be the Cleeve Hill Golf Club, who are staying open for us until 10.00pm and will be providing pre-booked meals. Their requirement for this is that food is booked in advance and food booking is available on the Fabian 4 site. A previous event in October where food was provided was extremely well received and the food was simple, but good quality and value for money.
Enter on Fabian4.co.uk by midnight on Thursday 22nd February if you wish to order food, or by midnight on Wednesday 28th February if not ordering food. . There is no exception to this rule, though EOD is available!

Directions and Parking
The parking is in the Golf Club car park. Do Not use the quarry car park, which will be locked early.
Grid Ref: SO98912 27255
What 3 words: tastings.laser.invite
The Club car park charge £2.00 but for those eating or drinking, providing the car is registered inside the club before leaving, then the charge is zero. If you fail to register your car, you will receive a penalty notice.
The Area
The area is also a golf course and open common land, neither of which will hopefully interfere with orienteering, but please take care. The map will have golf course identifiers removed for this event.
The Map
This is printed on A4 waterproof paper at 1:10,000 with 5m contours. Control descriptions will be on the front of the map and also available loose at Assembly. The map is drawn to ISSOM by Greg Best, NGOC.
Impassable fences and walls are clearly marked and must only be crossed via gates / stiles and not climbed over.
Start and Finish
The start and finish are just outside of the club house gate onto the common. Competitors should be ready to make their way to the start by 18:20 at the latest for a briefing. Mass start 18.30. Course closes at 19.45pm. Please report to download immediately so the event and final League scores can be calculated promptly.
Courses
Penalties and bonuses are as normal: 1 penalty point per 6 seconds late and 1 bonus point per 6 seconds early if all controls have been visited.
We will use SI Timing, in contact mode only, so you must punch start, finish and all controls. This is to allow us to avoid having to send out control collectors and so delay the prizegving, by leaving the controls out for collection on Sunday morning.
Timing and Fees
Starts: Mass start 18:30. Course closes at 19:45.
Fees
Pre-entry | Entry on the Day | Non-member Supplement | |

Juniors | £5 | £6 | £1 |

The slightly raised fee provides for a donation to the Cleeve Common Trust, whom we always support, and whose support for orienteering is unwavering and much appreciated.
SI dibber hire: Standard dibber £1 Adults, Juniors free
Touch Free dibber: £2 Adults, £1 Juniors
Pre-entry is strongly preferred. Enter on Fabian4.co.uk by midnight on Thursday 22th February if ordering food, or Wednesday 28th February if not
Entry on the day is available only while maps last, but note the premium price to discourage this. EOD payment by cash only.
Refunds
As the Government has removed all restrictions on events and activities, COVID related refunds are no longer available. The standard Fabian4 terms and conditions offer an automatic refund up to 2 months before the event date, and we do not normally vary this specification. That means that in most cases no refunds are possible, as we do not publish details until less than 2 months before the date of the event.
However, for all except large events we hold entries open until only a day or so before the event, so you can delay entry if unsure whether you can run, until very close to event day.
Dogs
Dogs are permitted on the courses, but must be ‘under control’.
Facilities, Prizegiving and Food
Toilets are available in the clubhouse.
Ensure that you register your vehicle at the bar in the clubhouse to avoid a parking penalty charge.
Food will be served from 20:15. Drinks will be available all evening for purchase from the bar.
Food must be pre-ordered via Fabian, no later than midnight on Sunday 18th February. There is a limited menu, as the club does not normally serve meals, only snacks, but we have used the facility before and the food is wholesome and good value for money.
Prize giving will happen as soon as the results have been prepared and checked.
Safety
As with all Western Night League events it is compulsory to carry a backup light and a whistle; these will be checked. It is advisable to carry a mobile phone too. The area is exposed, and if the weather is poor you may be required to carry a waterproof jacket.
Orienteering is an adventure sport. All runners take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety.
A risk assessment has been completed, and a copy will be held at Enquiries and Download in case competitors wish to consult it before their run.
A first aid kit and trained first aiders will be available at Download.
