We are pleased to announce a set of forest orienteering skills training courses around Chestnuts and Green Bottom, bordering the main Lightning Tree Hill map. These do not impinge on the area planned to be used for the 2024 league race on Lightning Tree Hill! You can find details here.
They have been designed by Tom Mills to allow you to practise specific skills, fast decision making for sprint and middle distance racing, contouring, and route choice. They use MapRun technology, so there are no controls on the ground, and are available until 31 December 2025. You need to ensure you have installed the latest version of MapRun before heading out to run these; this is MapRun 7, which is just called MapRun. The We are pleased to announce a set of forest orienteering skills training courses around Chestnuts and Green Bottom, bordering the main Lightning Tree Hill map. These do not impinge on the area planned to be used for the 2024 league race on Lightning Tree Hill! punch tolerance for each course has been held at the default 15m, which should be OK for most of the area, but if you find difficulty with the first control or two, there are features enabled, or available for you to enable, to help address possible GPS issues.
At any time on the course you can tap the Show Me button to see where the phone thinks you are; you have 10 chances to use this. Before starting, you can optionally enable the show track and show location facilities; If using a paper map you can do this regardless, and just not look at the phone unless unable to get a beep where you think you have got to a control. Of course these features do not work if using MapRunG with a GPS watch. If out alone you should carry your phone with you anyway.
Finally, and once again if out alone, you should notify someone of your plans, and make sure you also notify them when back out of the forest.
