Thursday 23rd January 2025 - Quedgeley

We kick off the 2025 league with a race in Quedgeley on the southern outskirts of Gloucester, just across the road from our first ever MapRun - in Kingsway in 2018. It's almost all typical residential suburbia, bounded on the West by the Sharpness canal and on the East by the main A38 into Gloucester from the M5. There are some new estates with lots of linking paths and alleyways, and some older areas where you just have to flog up and down the avenues with few options for finding quick cuts through between them.

NOTE to all MAPRUNNERS. You must be using MapRun v7 to run this course. It is just called MapRun. If you have MapRun6 or MapRunF please remove them and install just plain Maprun.

Entries are now open and will close at midnight on Tuesday 22 January. Enter Online

Directions and Parking

Parking is in the Severn Vale School/Quedgeley Health and Fitness Centre carpark. The car park is likely to be very busy with sports centre users, but there should be enough space here and there, including the small park of space on the left as you drive into the car park.

What Three Words: ///intro.guard.ears

Grid Ref: SO803139

The Start is at the car park entrance, on School Lane, and the Finish is inside the car park, on the pedestrian crossing 60m into the car park.

Click on the parking icon on the map below, and then the Direction icon icon to get directions to the course.

The Area

Typical suburbia, with a mix of older and newer estates, so a variety of route options in most places. There is an industrial strip on the Eastern edge of the map, but most of the area is fairly quiet suburbia. By 6 pm most people are home from work, but dog walkers are out in numbers!! The footpath along the western edge of the map - the Sharpness canal - can be very wet in places, and may be best avoided if the weather has been poor in the week before the race. One section which looked fairly long term wet when the courses was checked recently is marked on the map!

Timing and Fees

Starts from 18:00 to 18:30. If you think you'll struggle to make that start window, email the organiser to let him know, and we can extend starts a bit.

To guarantee a map, you will need to pre-enter via Fabian4: entries are now open, and will stay open until midnight on Wednesday 22nd January. A few extra maps will be available for entry on the day, but don't rely on this, and ideally bring cash, although we do now have an available card reader.

Entry fees: £5 seniors, plus £1 for unaffiliated (to British Orienteering) runners, £2 juniors (no added fee for unaffiliated juniors). Competitors aged under-16 must be accompanied. The fee covers third party liability insurance, a map printed on waterproof paper, and post-run cake!

The course

It’s a one hour score event using the MapRun app:

The Start and Finish are located in the close to each other towards the entrance to the car park

  • Checkpoints 1-10 are worth 10 points.

  • Checkpoints 11-20 are worth 20 points.

  • Checkpoints 21-30 are worth 30 points.

Score as many points as you can within an hour. If you’re late getting back, there’s a 10 point penalty per minute over.

You'll be issued with a waterproof map, A4, scale 1:10,000, before you start.

Please make sure you’ve installed MapRun before the event. If installing MapRun for the first time, select the MapRun app from your app store, and not MapRunF or MapRun6. MapRun, which is in practise Maprun v7, is now the standard app. If you haven’t used MapRun before, don’t worry – it’s easy to use, and we have full details on getting started.

You should download the course to your phone ideally before coming to the event, as sometimes there is little or no phone signal once there.

Links to enable download will appear here when the course is published, within the next few days.

MapRunG (Garmin watch) users: if you have MapRun6 or later, you do not need the event PIN number to download the course to your watch. This means you can download the course before your arrive at the event, in case there is no phone signal there.

Safety

Under 16s must be accompanied at all times.

Most of the course is on relatively quiet suburban roads but there are one or two busier roads through the area, where greater care will be needed when crossing. You can also expect to meet pedestrians and should take care in particular when turning corners or emerging from alleyways etc.

Take care on the canal towpath not to fall in the water!

A head torch is mandatory, and some form of reflective clothing strongly advised.

A first aid kit will be available at registration.

Orienteering is an adventure sport, and you are responsible for your own safety.
