This course covers both central Gloucester and Alney Island, providing a nice variation in terrain between central city streets and the paths and woodland of Alney Island, just on the Western outskirts of the city. It is important to note that the event is based in Westgate Car park, from which getting out into the city is straightforward, but getting over to Alney Island is not; you should not attempt to cross the main circulatory roads around Westgate retail park except via the footbridge from the car park to the retail centre, and thence across the quieter slip road opposite Riverside leisure centre to get to the footpaths leading to the pedestrian bridge over the river and thence to paths on Alney Island. The downloadable map has a blow up insert in the corner showing the layout of the paths around control 4, so take great care in this area. The roads have no pedestrian pavements on the main A417 causeways into and out of town there.
Note also that Alney Island can be very wet, and can flood, in periods of particularly heavy rain.
