Thursday 27th February 2025 - Charlton Kings
We are back across the Severn to the outskirts of Cheltenham for League 3 in the 2025 series, with a race around the suburbs of Charlton Kings, on the East side of Cheltenham. It's an area of typical suburban streets, though with a few open areas scattered throughout, and plenty of interest for a MapRun course; this is our first visit back there for several years, so it will be fresh terrain for most people.
NOTE to all MAPRUNNERS. You must be using MapRun v7 to run this course. It is just called MapRun. If you have MapRun6 or MapRunF please remove them and install just plain Maprun.
Entries are now open and will close at midnight on Wednesday 26th February.

Directions and Parking
Parking is in the Church Piece carpark. Unfortunately, since this was selected as the start and finish point for the race, some of the fairly limited number of parking spaces have just been closed off to allow the installation of electric chargers, so space will be a significant premium. There is however, roadside parking in the neighbouring streets, so if no room in the car park, please try and find somewhere nearby, and then walk to the car park, where we will be based.

The Start and Finish are at the far right corner of the pedestrian precinct adjacent to the end of the car park, where footpaths run out into the residential area beyond the shops.

The Area
Typical suburbia, crossed by a couple of major roads which will require care when crossing, and with a ring of semi-rural controls around the other edges of the residential areas. Many parts of the area have relatively few alleyways and cuts through between residential roads, so thought will be needed when looking for the shortest routes between controls; there may be quite long route options!
Timing and Fees
Starts from 18:00 to 18:30. If you think you'll struggle to make that start window, email the organiser to let him know, and we can extend starts a bit.
To guarantee a map, you will need to pre-enter via Fabian4: entries are now open, and will stay open until midnight on Wednesday 26th February. A few extra maps will be available for entry on the day, but don't rely on this, and ideally bring cash, although we do now have an available card reader.
Entry fees: £5 seniors, plus £1 for unaffiliated (to British Orienteering) runners, £2 juniors (no added fee for unaffiliated juniors). Competitors aged under-16 must be accompanied. The fee covers third party liability insurance, a map printed on waterproof paper, and post-run cake!
The course
It’s a one hour score event using the MapRun app. We revert to the standard scoring scheme for this race, after the Odds and Evens variant at Coleford.
The Start and Finish are located in the far right corner of the pedestrian precinct next to the Co-op, and beyond the car park.
-
Checkpoints 1-10 are worth 10 points.
-
Checkpoints 11-20 are worth 20 points.
-
Checkpoints 21-30 are worth 30 points.
Score as many points as you can within an hour. If you’re late getting back, there’s a 10 point penalty per minute over.
You'll be issued with a waterproof map, A4, scale 1:10,000, before you start.
Please make sure you’ve installed MapRun before the event. If installing MapRun for the first time, select the MapRun app from your app store, and not MapRunF or MapRun6. MapRun, which is in practise Maprun v7, is now the standard app. If you haven’t used MapRun before, don’t worry – it’s easy to use, and we have full details on getting started.
You should download the course to your phone ideally before coming to the event, as sometimes there is little or no phone signal once there.
You can download the course by scanning this QR code
or by tapping this link on your MapRun phone, or by using the Select Event button in MapRun and navigating to the UK/Gloucestershire/Current Series folder.
MapRunG (Garmin) and MapRunA (Apple) watch users: you do not need the event PIN number to download the course to your watch. This means you can download the course before you arrive at the event, in case there is no phone signal there.
Safety
Under 16s must be accompanied at all times.
Most of the course is on relatively quiet suburban roads but there are one or two busier roads through the area, where greater care will be needed when crossing. You can also expect to meet pedestrians and should take care in particular when turning corners or emerging from alleyways etc.
A head torch is mandatory, and some form of reflective clothing strongly advised.
A first aid kit will be available at registration.
Orienteering is an adventure sport, and you are responsible for your own safety.
