The first race of the NGOC 2020 League takes place in the western part of Cranham, in the Cotswold Hills. This is a local level, classic distance race. You can pre-enter on Fabian4.

Directions and Parking

Parking is at Cranham Cricket Club, for which we are grateful to them. Please follow the instruction of marshals and only park and drive on the long grass and NOT on the short grass of the pitch.

The event will be signed from the narrow, twisty, steep road through Cranham village at the junction with another small road signposted to Sheepscombe. Take care driving on these roads. The road through the village can either be approached from the B4070 or the A46.

The Start and Finish are adjacent to the cricket ground, so only a brief walk.

The Area

We are using the western part of Cranham, which comprises Buckholt Wood, Cranham Common and Saltridge Wood. This is an extensive area of deciduous (mostly beech) woodland with deep valleys and a reasonable path network. Not surprisingly, the ground is very wet in many places. There is also open common land and some open fields. Much of the area is part of the National Nature Reserve. We are grateful to Natural England, the National Trust and the Cranham Scout Centre for allowing us to run here.

Note that the adjacent areas further east are embargoed for the Compass Sport Cup qualifier in March, so anybody who will be competing at that event must not stray into that area, for example by going for a walk afterwards. Map of the embargoed area

The Map

1:10000, 5m contours, A4 size, pre-printed on waterproof paper. Based on Lidar. Control descriptions will be printed on the map and loose descriptions available at the registration.

Courses

Course Length Climb No. Controls
Yellow 2.2km 80m 8
Orange 2.9km 155m 9
Short Green 2.7km 115m 8
Green 3.7km 225m 14
Blue 5.0km 300m 13
Brown 7.1km 390m 19

IMPORTANT Juniors under 16 who are running alone are NOT permitted to run Brown, Blue or Short Green, because of road crossings. However, under-16s are allowed alone on the Green course. This course has one road crossing, which will be manned between 11am and 12 only. Hence, juniors on this course MUST start between 11 and 11.45am.

No restrictions for juniors on Yellow and Orange.

As it’s a steep area, there’s a lot of climb on all courses. We have tried to minimise climb on the Short Green course for older competitors, within the constraints of the area, and avoid the steepest slopes. This means the Short Green has had to cross roads so is unfortunately not suitable for unaccompanied juniors.

There will be a Mr Men string course available, close to registration.

Sadly, however, there will not be a Beat the Trail course this time, as with our recent NGOC50 weekend we have not had the time or resources to plan one. The next Trail course will be at Mallards Pike on 16th Feb.

Courses will close at 2:30pm. Competitors on longer courses should ensure they start early enough to complete their runs before closure.

We will be using Sportident(SI) timing, with touch free dibbing. All runners must however ensure they punch both the Start and the Finish in the normal manner.

Times

Registration is open from 10:30 to 12:45
Starts are from 11:00 – 13:00 but read the important notice above for juniors on Green
Courses close 14:30

Safety

Competitors take part at their own risk and are responsible for their own safety.

  • Whistles are compulsory for Under 16s and are strongly advised for all.
  • Please wear appropriate clothing and footwear for terrain. Full body cover is required in accordance with British Orienteering Rules; footwear should have sufficient grip to cope with steep and slippery terrain.
  • In the event of bad weather, the Organiser might insist on the wearing/carrying of hooded waterproof jackets.
  • A possible route on Brown, Blue and Short Green courses passes through an electric fenced enclosure with cows. All possible entry points to this enclosure are gated. Please mind the cows and close the gates behind you.
  • Please cross the roads found on the Brown, Blue and Short Green Courses with care.
Competitors must be courteous to any mountain bikers, horse riders and other members of the public.
  • Be prepared to give way to downhill mountain bikers, who may be travelling at speed.
  • Check for ticks after your run.
  • A Risk Assessment for the event will be available to view at Assembly.
  • Due to the time of year, if the Organiser considers the staging of the event to be in doubt, a warning notice will appear on the NGOC website a few days beforehand, advising people to look at the website before leaving home, and an update will be posted no later than 08:30 on the day to say if it’s on or not.

Facilities

The NGOC café will be present.

We hope to have toilets available, although this depends on the weather not being too cold. If cold, the water will be turned off and toilets will not be available. Toilets now confirmed. Plus, we will also now have use of the clubhouse

Dogs

Dogs are permitted at assembly and on courses. Please keep dogs under control and clear up any mess, especially on the cricket ground.
