We head back West again for this race, further West than usual in fact, to the hamlet of Kingsthorne, and Aconbury Hill, with its Iron Age hill fort - Aconbury Camp, sometime base for the Royalists during the Civil War, and for the Scots before the siege of Hereford in 1645 - overlooking the surrounding Herefordshire countryside. The race takes in the wooded hill, and the village of Kingsthorne below it, with a network of lanes and footpaths.

The Area

Mixed woodland, with a good path network, mainly strimmed and clear of undergrowth, on Aconbury. Some of the paths around the village are somewhat overgrown, but controls are planned such that in general these are not optimal routes. As at Cleddon, there is no requirement to keep to the paths in the woods, but no benefit, and significant discomfort, in straying from them. Shorts should be OK. Outside the woods, keep to the mapped lanes and rights of way.

Timing and Fees

Starts from 1830 to 1900.

To guarantee a map, you will need to pre-enter via Fabian4: this is open until midnight on Tuesday 16 August. A few extra maps will be available for entry on the day, but don't rely on this!


Enter Online

Entry fees: £5 seniors, £2 juniors. Competitors aged under-16 must be accompanied if running the full course, but there is a woodland only circuit that they can run unaccompanied. The fee covers third party liability insurance, a map printed on waterproof paper, and post-run cake!

We may or may not be able to take card payments, so bring cash if planning to enter on the day.

The course

It’s a one hour score event using the MapRun app:

  • Checkpoints 1-10 are worth 10 points.

  • Checkpoints 11-20 are worth 20 points.

  • Checkpoints 21-30 are worth 30 points.

Score as many points as you can within an hour. If you’re late getting back, there’s a 10 point penalty per minute over.

You'll be issued with a waterproof map, A4, scale 1:10,000, before you start.

Safety

  • The course is a combination of Aconbury Woods and the rural roads and green lanes of Kingsthorne and Little Birch. Most of the roads are narrow and none have pavement. Any traffic should be slow moving but care must be taken, especially on blind bends.
  • Under 16s must be accompanied if running the whole course but an option is available to run unaccompanied on a smaller course (12 controls), wholly within Aconbury Woods.

Although all legal Covid restrictions have ceased, you should NOT attend if you are Covid positive, or suspect you are.
